How to choose a welder for your workshop
Current and material thickness
Match the current to the thickest part you weld. Up to 3 mm, 120 A is enough; at 8 mm aim for 180 A; at 15 mm for 250 A; and for heavier structures 350 A and above. Leave yourself headroom. A machine running at half its range heats up more slowly and will not break the weld halfway through the job. From 8 mm upwards look at water cooling, because a gas-cooled torch gets hot quickly.
230 or 400 V
A standard 230 V socket usually sits on a 16 A fuse, so the real ceiling is machines up to 250 A. Above that you need three-phase power, that is 400 V. If your workshop only has a domestic socket, say so in the second question and the wizard will filter out equipment that would not start anyway. A three-phase connection is a one-off cost and the difference in output is large, so sometimes the connection is cheaper than a weaker machine.
MIG or TIG
MIG/MAG is faster and more forgiving, which is why it is used for mild steel structures and long welds. TIG gives a narrow, clean weld and handles thin sheet and stainless steel, but the work takes longer. For aluminium you need a TIG machine with AC/DC or a MIG machine with pulse. Welding mixed materials? Take a synergic MIG/MAG, because the program sets the parameters for you.
