Welding torches: how to choose

We have split the range into five groups so you can search by process. MIG/MAG torches cover gas and water cooled, machine and spool gun versions. TIG torches are types 9, 17, 18, 20 and 26, rigid and flexible. Plasma torches come in manual and machine versions with non-contact ignition. MMA holders and earth leads cover electrode holders, earth clamps and cables from 25 to 70 square millimetres. Interconnection cables link source and feeder over 1.5 to 20 metres.

Match the torch to the current at your real duty cycle, not to the maximum on the machine. A gas cooled 250 A MIG torch at 60 percent is enough for sheet and short runs. On long welds above 300 A move to water cooling, otherwise the neck and cable overheat and nozzles wear faster.

Cable length matters for wire feeding. Up to 3 metres a two roll feeder handles solid wire. Above 4 metres and with aluminium you need four rolls, a PTFE liner or a push pull torch.

With TIG, a gas cooled type 17 is enough up to 150 A, type 26 up to 200 A, water cooled type 18 works up to 350 A. For difficult access take a short cup and a gas lens.

Match the electrode holder to current and cable size. Up to 200 A a 200 A holder with 25 square millimetres is enough, at 400 A you need a 400 A holder and 50 square millimetres.
