Thermanit 18/17 E Mn is a high alloyed austenitic stainless submerged arc (SAW) wire. It works on pressure vessels, pipework and austenitic steel structures where corrosion resistance matters.
Submerged arc welding gives a very high deposition rate on long, repeatable welds. The wire also suits cladding runs on steel, its composition protects the joint against intergranular corrosion, and the deposit has an austenitic structure.
- Classification EN ISO: 14343-A S Z 18 16 5 N L
- AWS classification: A5.9 / SFA-5.9 ER317L (mod.)
- Shielding: flux matched to the wire, no shielding gas
Keep the interpass temperature low and the beads narrow, overheating austenitic steel promotes carbide precipitation and distortion. Watch the wire stick-out and the position of the head against the weld centre line, under a flux you cannot see the pool and a mistake shows only after the slag is chipped off. Match the flux to this wire and check how dry it is, drying the flux decides the hydrogen level in the weld.
