What Union S P 24 SAW wire is used for

Union S P 24 is a submerged arc (SAW) wire for welding creep-resistant CrMo steels. It is used on boilers, steam pipelines, refinery installations and parts working at elevated temperature.

The base material is 1.7378. The wire is used on mechanised stations for butt and circumferential welds, it works in power plant on superheaters and headers, and it runs as a set with a matched flux that decides the mechanical properties of the weld.

  • Classification EN ISO: S Z CrMo2VNb
  • AWS classification: EG
  • Shielding: flux matched to the wire, no shielding gas
  • Diameters: 2.0 mm

Watch the hydrogen level, dry consumables and a preheated groove are your basic protection against cold cracking. Match the flux to this wire and check how dry it is, drying the flux decides the hydrogen level in the weld. Keep an even flux layer over the arc, too thin a layer exposes the arc and too thick a one spoils the bead shape.
