UTP 86 FN is a basic coated electrode of the ENiFe-Cl type for welding and surfacing grey cast iron EN GJL 100 to EN GJL 400, nodular iron EN GJS 400 to EN GJS 700 and malleable iron EN GJMB 350 to EN GJMB 650. You join these materials to each other with it, and also to steel and cast steel, in repair, production and new fabrication.
The electrode butters the surface of cast iron well, the arc burns steadily and the weld comes out flat, with no undercut at the toes. On fillet welds the bead shape is particularly even, for example when welding nodular iron flanges and sockets into pipe of the same material. The bimetallic core wire raises the current carrying capacity and the deposition rate, and the deposit is crack resistant and easy to machine with cutting tools.

For the most difficult cast iron repairs the manufacturer recommends a pair of electrodes: butter the surface with the pure nickel UTP 8 and make the filling with this one. Weld a flange to a pipe alternately on opposite sides of the circumference, so as not to pull the axis over. Short beads and peening after every pass stay the rule here too. On direct current connect the electrode to the negative pole.
