What Avesta 309L SAW wire is used for

Avesta 309L is a submerged arc (SAW) wire for welding stainless and acid-resistant steels. It goes into tanks, process pipelines and equipment for the chemical and food industries.

The typical base material is 309L. The wire also suits cladding runs, that is protective layers built up on steel.

  • Classification EN ISO: S 23 12 L
  • AWS classification: ER309L
  • Shielding: flux matched to the wire, no shielding gas
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.4 / 3.2 mm

Keep the interpass temperature low and the beads narrow, overheating austenitic steel promotes carbide precipitation and distortion. Keep an even flux layer over the arc, too thin a layer exposes the arc and too thick a one spoils the bead shape. Watch the wire stick-out and the position of the head against the weld centre line, under a flux you cannot see the pool and a mistake shows only after the slag is chipped off. Thinner diameters suit root runs and thin sheet, thicker ones suit filling.
