Thermanit A-318 is a high alloyed austenitic stainless submerged arc (SAW) wire. It is used on process installations, heat exchangers, sanitary structures and parts exposed to corrosion.
Base materials include 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4409, 1.4435, 1.4436, 1.4437 and 1.4571. The wire also serves for cladding carbon steel surfaces, and its deposit resists intergranular corrosion with an austenitic structure.
- Classification EN ISO: 14343-A S 19 12 3 Nb
- AWS classification: A5.9 / SFA-5.9 ER318
- Shielding: flux matched to the wire, no shielding gas
- Diameters: 1.5 / 2.4 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
Keep the interpass temperature low and the beads narrow, overheating austenitic steel promotes carbide precipitation and distortion. Watch the wire stick-out and the position of the head against the weld centre line, under a flux you cannot see the pool and a mistake shows only after the slag is chipped off. Match the flux to this wire and check how dry it is, drying the flux decides the hydrogen level in the weld.
