Thermanit ATS 4 is a basic electrode of the E 19 9 H B / E308H-15 type for joining and surfacing on creep resistant steels and cast steel grades of similar composition. The manufacturer states creep resistance up to 700 degrees C and scaling resistance up to 800 degrees C.
The base materials are 1.4948 (X6CrNi18-11), 1.4878 (X12CrNiTi18-9) and 1.4550 (X6CrNiNb18-10). The H variant has a raised carbon content, which is what builds the creep strength at elevated temperature. The electrode carries the TÜV approval and the CE mark.

On pipework and boiler parts that run hot, do not substitute a low carbon L grade for this electrode, or you will lose the creep strength. Dry basic electrodes to the data sheet of the manufacturer and take them from the quiver one at a time. Use DC with the electrode positive, a short arc and stringer beads, and keep the interpass temperature under control.
