What Thermanit MTS 3-LNi SAW wire is used for

Thermanit MTS 3-LNi is a submerged arc (SAW) wire for welding creep-resistant CrMo steels. It is used in boiler making, on pressure vessels and petrochemical installations.

Typical base materials are 1.4903 and ASTM A 199. The wire also suits cladding runs, that is protective layers built up on steel.

  • Classification EN ISO: 24598-A, S S ZCrMo91
  • AWS classification: A5.23 / SFA-5.23, EB91
  • Shielding: flux matched to the wire, no shielding gas
  • Diameters: 2.4 / 3.2 mm

Plan the preheating and the post weld heat treatment to the WPS for the grade in hand, CrMo steels harden in the heat affected zone. Match the flux to this wire and check how dry it is, drying the flux decides the hydrogen level in the weld. Keep an even flux layer over the arc, too thin a layer exposes the arc and too thick a one spoils the bead shape. Thinner diameters suit root runs and thin sheet, thicker ones suit filling.
