What BÖHLER FOX A 7 stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER FOX A 7 is a basic coated, core wire alloyed austenitic electrode of the E 18 8 Mn B / E307-15 type for welding and cladding in all positions except vertical down. It is a versatile electrode for numerous applications: welding hard to weld steels, dissimilar welding, repair and maintenance, and tough buffer and intermediate layers for cladding rails and switches, valve seats and parts in hydropower plants.

The typical base material is the high manganese steel 14Mn. The weld metal offers exceptionally high ductility and elongation together with outstanding crack resistance, also after high dilution of hard to weld steels. It resists embrittlement at service temperatures from minus 100 to 650 degrees C, it work hardens and it resists cavitation well. The deposit is resistant to scaling up to 850 degrees C, but above 500 degrees C it does not resist sulphurous combustion gases.

This is the classic rescue electrode: take it when you do not know the steel grade exactly, or when the joint is rigid and cracking is a risk. Dry basic electrodes to the maker data sheet and keep them in a quiver. Weld on direct current with the electrode positive, a short arc and thin beads, and let the joint cool between layers. Under hard deposits lay one or two buffer layers and put the working layer on top.
