What BÖHLER FOX ASN 5-A stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER FOX ASN 5-A is a rutile coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 18 16 5 N L R type for welding corrosion resistant CrNiMo steels such as 1.4439 / 317L. The maker names the chemical industry, flue gas desulphurisation, seawater desalination and the pulp and paper and textile industries.

The base grades are 1.4436 (X3CrNiMo17-13-3), 1.4439 (X2CrNiMoN17-13-5) and 1.4429 (X2CrNiMoN17-13-3). The deposit is over-alloyed in molybdenum, to 4.5 percent, which compensates segregation when you weld materials with 3 to 4 percent Mo. The resistance to stress corrosion cracking and to pitting is excellent, and the service temperature runs from minus 120 to 400 degrees C. The electrode runs quietly on alternating and direct current with minimum spatter, the slag releases itself and the bead comes out smooth.

  • Classification EN ISO 3581-A: E 18 16 5 N L R 3 2
  • AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E317L-17 (mod.)
  • Coating: rutile
  • Current: AC/DC+
  • Diameters: 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 300 and 350 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (07118), CE

The rutile version is easier to run than the basic ASN 5 and offers a wider choice of diameters, so it suits site work and longer welds. Set the current in the lower part of the range for the diameter and run the bead without wide weaving, to limit the heating. Take the heat tint off with a brush kept only for stainless steel. Store the electrodes dry and close an opened tin.
