BÖHLER FOX BVD 100 is a basic coated electrode for vertical-down welding of large diameter pipelines and for structural work. The manufacturer intended it for filler and cover passes in pipeline construction, where the pace counts: the deposition rate with this technique is 80 to 100 percent higher than with vertical-up welding.
The base steel is L555MB. The deposit is extremely crack resistant, tough and very low in diffusible hydrogen. The coating was developed so that the electrode strikes reliably and does not leave start porosity, which is why it runs calmly in the field as well, where conditions are harder to control.

A basic coating takes up moisture, so dry the electrodes to the data sheet and carry them in a portable quiver, especially on site. Vertical-down welding calls for fast travel and an electrode held almost perpendicular to the pipe; if you slow down, the slag runs ahead of the pool and gets into the weld. Set DC with the positive pole on the holder and work with a short arc. Make the root with a consumable meant for it and leave BVD 100 for filling and capping.
