BÖHLER FOX CEL 70-P is a cellulosic coated electrode of the E7010-P1 type, meant for vertical-down welding of large diameter pipelines made of higher strength steel. The manufacturer recommends it for the hot pass and for filler and cover layers. The material is suitable for sour gas installations, the HIC test being carried out to NACE TM-02-84.
The base steels cover L290MB to L415MB, P235T2 to P355T2 as well as S235JR, S275JR, S235J2 and S275J2. Compared with the related FOX CEL 75, this electrode works with a sharper arc and gives a more fluid pool, which fills the groove faster at high travel speeds. The whole vertical-down technique also works out cheaper than traditional vertical-up welding.

A fluid pool needs a steady hand: hold the electrode almost perpendicular to the pipe and come down at an even pace, without stopping. Keep the current towards the upper limit given by the manufacturer, because at low settings a cellulosic arc turns restless. Chip the slag off the root before the hot pass, and if the root has had time to cool, preheat the joint. Do not bake these electrodes, keep them in the original packaging, away from moisture.
