BÖHLER FOX CEL is a cellulosic coated electrode of the E6010 type for vertical-down welding of large diameter pipelines. The manufacturer intended it for root runs, welded downhill and uphill, for hot passes, filling and capping, and recommends it above all for the root. The electrode is qualified for sour gas service after the HIC test to NACE TM-02-84, and SSC test values are available too.
The base steels are P235T2 to P355T2, L210NB to L415NB, L290MB to L415MB as well as S235JR, S275JR and S235J2. A cellulosic coating gives a deeply penetrating arc and bridges the gap well, so the root fuses through even when the pipe fit-up is uneven. The deposit has high impact energy values, which raises the safety margin of a joint welded in the field.

Do not treat cellulosic electrodes like basic ones: their coating needs its process moisture and baking in an oven destroys it, so follow the data sheet. Weld the root with a long, pushing arc and press the electrode into the gap until you feel resistance. Going downhill, do not slow down, or the slag will run under the pool. Make the hot pass before the root cools, to burn out inclusions and limit cracking.
