BÖHLER FOX EAS 2-VD is a rutile-basic coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 9 L R / E308L-17 type, designed for vertical-down welding of stainless steel sheet of the 1.4307 / 304L type. It suits root and cap layers on V joints welded in that position.
The base materials include 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10), 1.4306 (X2CrNi19-11) and 1.4307 (X2CrNi18-9). At the same electrode diameter and the same wall thickness the manufacturer states a saving of up to 50 percent of the welding time compared with the vertical-up position. The fast travel speed means low heat input and little distortion, so there is less straightening work afterwards. The maximum service temperature is 350 degrees C and the scaling temperature is approximately 850 degrees C in air.

Vertical-down has its own rules: hold the electrode almost perpendicular to the sheet, travel fast and never let the slag run ahead of the pool, because that is how inclusions form. Use DC with the electrode positive and set the current higher than for vertical-up. Practise the technique on a coupon before you weld on a tank, this position forgives less than the others.
