BÖHLER FOX EAS 4 M is a basic coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 12 3 L B / E316L-15 type, used primarily for the austenitic grades 1.4404 and 1.4435 / 316L. The manufacturer states reliable impact toughness values down to -196 degrees C.
The base material list includes 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The electrode bridges gaps well and gives excellent X-ray safety. It welds in all positions except vertical-down, the pool and the slag stay easy to control and the slag comes off readily even in narrow preparations. The ferrite content lies between 4 and 12 FN, usually below 10, and for stricter requirements the manufacturer offers the FOX EAS 4 M (LF) variant with 3 to 8 FN. The maximum service temperature is 400 degrees C.

The basic coating buys you toughness and radiographic soundness here, so take this electrode to pressure vessels and pipework that will be RT tested. Dry the electrodes as the data sheet requires and take them from the quiver one at a time. Use DC with the electrode positive, keep the arc short, run stringer beads and hold the interpass temperature down.
