BÖHLER FOX EAS 4 M (LF) is a basic coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 12 3 L B / E316L-15 type, intended mainly for the austenitic grades 1.4404 and 1.4435 / 316L. The LF variant has a controlled ferrite content of 3 to 8 FN, narrower on request.
Among the base materials the manufacturer lists 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The alloying concept gives excellent impact toughness down to -196 degrees C with lateral expansion above 0.38 mm, which is what LNG plant work calls for. The electrode bridges gaps well, gives a sound root pass and excellent X-ray safety, and the slag comes off easily even in narrow preparations. The maximum service temperature is 400 degrees C.

The LF variant only makes sense if you keep the ferrite under control, so limit dilution from the parent metal and hold the interpass temperature down. It comes in a single diameter of 3.2 mm, which on heavier walls means more runs and a plan for the bead sequence. Dry the electrodes to the data sheet, work from a quiver and record your parameters, because cryogenic acceptance requires it.
