BÖHLER FOX EV 40 is a basic coated electrode of the E 35 4 B 4 2 H5 type for ductile, crack resistant joints in unalloyed and low alloy steels. The manufacturer directs it above all to ammonia tanks, where a low weld hardness is what counts.
The range of steels covers P235T1 to P275T1, L290MB to L320MB, S235JRS1 to S235J4, S255N to S355N, P255NH to P355NH and S255NL to S355NL. The strength of the deposit is deliberately low, matched to unalloyed steels, which keeps the joint ductile. The impact energy holds down to -40 degrees C, in the aged condition as well, and the hardness does not exceed 210 HV. The basic coating gives very little diffusible hydrogen, at the H5 level.

Hardness below 210 HV comes from the chosen composition, but you will only hold it with the heat kept calm, so do not exceed the interpass temperature in the procedure. Dry the electrodes to the data sheet and take to the workstation only what you will use at once, because a damp basic coating destroys the H5 class. Weld with a short arc, on DC with the electrode positive. On ammonia tanks follow the requirements of the client for weld hardness and post weld heat treatment.
