BÖHLER FOX K 55 is a basic coated electrode of the E7016 type with a clean deposit and good impact energy. The manufacturer recommends it above all for rail joints and crossing frogs in railway and tramway track, for rail grades with a tensile strength up to 1080 MPa, and away from the track for machine building and tank construction.
The base steels are P295GH, P355GH and S355N. The electrode is made in a single diameter of 3.2 mm and a length of 450 mm. The basic coating gives little diffusible hydrogen, at the H5 level, which on rails translates directly into the crack resistance of the joint. The material carries TÜV and German railways DB approvals.

Rail has a high carbon content, so preheating and slow cooling after welding are compulsory here, according to the technical instruction of the track authority. Bake the electrodes before work and keep them in a quiver for the whole shift. Lay short beads one after another, without breaking the thermal cycle. Once the joint has cooled, grind the reinforcement back to the profile of the rail head.
