BÖHLER FOX SPE is an electrode with a rutile-basic coating, which the manufacturer recommends for out of position work, except vertical-down. It suits root passes particularly well, and the welds come out clean under radiographic testing. Applications cover steel structures, tank building and pipework installations.
The base steels are S235JR to S355JR, S235JO to S355JO, S275N to S355N, S275M to S355M, P235GH to P355GH and P195TR1 to P265TR1. A rutile-basic coating combines an easy arc with raised mechanical properties of the deposit, which is why the electrode fits many base materials at once. On alternating current it runs very calmly.

Lay the root with the thinner diameter, 2.0 or 2.5 mm, with a short arc and even travel, and leave the 5.0 mm diameter for filling in the flat position. Out of position reduce the current by a few amps compared with flat and lay narrow beads. If the joint is going for radiography, prepare clean edges and chip the slag after every layer. On an older transformer this electrode holds the arc without flickering.
