What BÖHLER Q E 309L-17 stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER Q E 309L-17 is a rutile coated electrode of the E 23 12 L / E309L-17 type for welding dissimilar joints and for surfacing. The joint works from -60 to 300 degrees C and weld claddings up to 400 degrees C.

The electrode runs easily on AC and DC, takes a high current, hardly spatters, and the slag releases by itself from a smooth bead. The approvals cover TÜV, ABS and DNV, so the electrode is documented for marine inspection work.

The typical job for this electrode is welding carbon steel to stainless, where keeping the ferrite in the deposit is what matters. Limit dilution: current in the lower part of the range, short arc, stringer beads, and the arc held closer to the carbon steel side. If the clad surface is going to work in corrosion, lay two layers instead of one.
