Application

What Thermanit 20/16 SM TIG rod is used for

Thermanit 20/16 SM is a high alloyed austenitic stainless TIG rod. It works on pressure vessels, pipework and austenitic steel structures where corrosion resistance matters.

The rod joins grades such as 1.3948, 1.3951, 1.3952, 1.3957, 1.5662, X8Ni9 and 1.3964, along with related materials. It also serves for cladding carbon steel surfaces and is used in shipbuilding and vessel repair.

  • Classification EN ISO: 14343-A W Z 22 17 8 4 N L
  • AWS classification: A5.9 / SFA-5.9
  • Shielding gas: I1
  • Diameters: 1.0 / 1.2 / 1.5 / 1.6 / 2.0 / 2.4 mm
  • Approvals: DNV, WIWEB, CE

Keep the heat input down and do not hold the joint hot longer than you need to, austenite expands strongly and pulls the structure out of shape. Grind the tungsten tip along its axis and hold a short arc, otherwise the pool spreads.
