What Thermanit 309L TIG rod is used for

Thermanit 309L is a high alloyed austenitic stainless TIG rod. It works on pressure vessels, pipework and austenitic steel structures where corrosion resistance matters.

The rod joins grades such as 1.4301, X5CrNi18-10, 1.4306, X2CrNi19-11, 1.4308, 1.4401 and 1.4404, along with related materials. Its deposit has an austenitic structure that resists corrosion.

Keep the heat input down and do not hold the joint hot longer than you need to, austenite expands strongly and pulls the structure out of shape. Grind the tungsten tip along its axis and hold a short arc, otherwise the pool spreads. Protect the root when you weld from one side, an oxidised underside spoils the corrosion resistance.
