What Thermanit 686 solid MIG/MAG wire is used for

Thermanit 686 is a solid wire in a nickel alloy for corrosion resistant NiCrMo alloys of the 686 type. It works on tanks and pipework made of nickel alloys, and on cladding layers over steel.

Base materials include NiCr21Mo14W, NiCr23Mo16Al, NiCr21Mo16W, NiMo16Cr15W and UNS N06022. The deposit keeps its impact toughness down to cryogenic temperatures, so the wire also reaches tanks for liquefied gases, and it is used for cladding carbon steel surfaces.

  • Classification EN ISO: 18274 S Ni 6686 (NiCr21Mo16W4)
  • AWS classification: A5.14 ERNiCrMo-14
  • Shielding gas: Z-ArHeHC-30/2/0.05
  • Diameters: 1.0 / 1.2 mm

Degrease the joint before welding, because sulphur and lead residues left after machining cause hot cracking in nickel. Check the contact tip, a worn bore upsets wire feeding and leads to burnback. Match the feed rolls to the wire diameter and inspect the liner, wire slip shows up at once as an unstable arc. Thinner diameters suit root runs and thin sheet, thicker ones suit filling.
