What Thermanit A-318 TIG rod is used for

Thermanit A-318 is a high alloyed austenitic stainless TIG rod. It works on pressure vessels, pipework and austenitic steel structures where corrosion resistance matters.

The rod joins grades such as 1.4401, 1.4404, 1.4409, 1.4435, 1.4436, 1.4437 and 1.4571, along with related materials. It also serves for cladding carbon steel surfaces, and its deposit has an austenitic structure that resists corrosion.

After welding remove the heat tint by pickling or brushing, the oxide layer alone lowers the corrosion resistance of the joint. Protect the root when you weld from one side, an oxidised underside spoils the corrosion resistance. Keep the rod inside the gas shield even after you lift it from the pool, a cold oxidised end will contaminate the next drop.
