Thermanit A is a TIG rod for welding stainless and acid-resistant steels. Typical work covers tanks, process installations, food and chemical industry equipment and structures in contact with water and steam.
Typical base materials are 1.4583, UNS S31653, AISI 316Cb and 316L. The rod also serves for cladding carbon steel surfaces, and its composition protects the joint against intergranular corrosion.

After welding remove the heat tint by pickling or brushing, the oxide layer alone lowers the corrosion resistance of the joint. Grind the tungsten tip along its axis and hold a short arc, otherwise the pool spreads. Protect the root when you weld from one side, an oxidised underside spoils the corrosion resistance. Match the diameter to the plate thickness and the welding position, thinner rods are easier to control out of position.
