Thermanit MTS 616 is a core wire alloyed covered electrode with a basic coating for manual arc welding. The 9Cr-1.8W-0.5Mo-V-Nb type deposit has a tempered martensitic structure after heat treatment. The manufacturer intended it for tube, pipe, plate and forgings made of creep resistant steels of the ASTM grade 92 class, used in thermal power plants.
The base material is 1.4901 (X10CrWMoVNb9-2). A controlled sum of manganese and nickel keeps the Ac1 temperature safely above 780 degrees C. The chemical composition was chosen for high creep resistance and ductility of the deposit after heat treatment, with a low level of trace elements. The basic coating gives a low content of diffusible hydrogen in the weld.

Grade 92 steel works at higher parameters than grade 91, so departures from the thermal regime show up sooner in the life of the joint. Hold the preheat and the interpass temperature without breaks, including at a change of welder. Carry out the post weld tempering in the window given in the data sheet of the base material. Bake the electrodes before the shift and hand them out from the quiver one at a time.
