UNION X 96 is a TIG rod for welding quenched and tempered high strength steels. It is used in machine building, crane structures and commercial vehicles.
Typical base materials are S960Q, S960QL, S890Q, S890QL, S890MC and S960MC. The rod suits root runs, thin walls and welds that need a smooth face.
- Classification EN ISO: W 89 2 I1 Mn4Ni2.5CrMo
- AWS classification: A5.28 / SFA-5.28, ER120S-G
- Diameters: 2.4 mm
Do not exceed the permitted interpass temperature, an overheated heat affected zone loses its toughness. Protect the root when you weld from one side, an oxidised underside spoils the corrosion resistance. Keep the rod inside the gas shield even after you lift it from the pool, a cold oxidised end will contaminate the next drop. Keep the heat input within the range the steel maker specifies, going above it lowers the strength of the joint. When you work to a qualified procedure, check that the filler matches what the WPS states. Plan the number of layers and the bead sequence before you start, on heavier joints this keeps distortion down.
