What UTP Soudonel D stick electrode is used for

UTP Soudonel D is a high recovery nickel base electrode of the E Ni 6620 / ENiCrMo-6 type, with a metal recovery of 150 percent. The manufacturer intended it for welding nickel steels that stay tough in the cold, such as X8Ni9, above all in the construction of cryogenic tanks and gas carriers: steels with 9 percent nickel for liquefied natural gas and with 5 percent nickel for liquefied ethylene.

The electrode was adapted for work on alternating current, because when nickel steels are welded on direct current the arc is deflected by the magnetic field. You weld with it in the flat, horizontal and vertical-up positions. The arc is stable, there is little spatter, the slag comes off easily and the bead has an even appearance.

  • Classification EN ISO 14172: E Ni6620 (NiCr14Mo7Fe)
  • AWS classification A5.11 / SFA-5.11: E NiCrMo-6
  • Current: AC/DC+
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 350 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (05466), BV, DNV

A recovery of 150 percent puts a lot of weld metal down in one pass, so watch the thickness of the layer and do not try to work overhead, which the manufacturer did not provide for. Match the current to the position, and vertical-up go lower than in the flat position. Keep the interpass temperature under control, because cryogenic tanks are accepted after impact testing. Degrease and dry the groove faces before you strike the arc.
