Avesta 309L is a rutile coated electrode of the E 23 12 L / E309L-17 type, intended primarily for surfacing low-alloyed steels and for dissimilar welds between mild steel and stainless steels. It can also be used on some high temperature steels, such as 1.4833 / ASTM 309S.
The all weld metal microstructure is austenitic with about 15 percent ferrite, and the corrosion resistance is superior to E 19 9 L / E308L fillers. Used for overlay welding on mild steel, it gives corrosion resistance equivalent to 1.4301 / 304 already in the first layer. The service temperature range is minus 60 to 300 degrees C, and up to 400 degrees C for weld claddings, with a scaling temperature of about 1000 degrees C in air. The approvals cover TÜV, DB, DNV and CWB.

On a joint between mild and stainless steel keep the arc closer to the mild side and limit the dilution, because excess iron in the deposit lowers the ferrite content and raises the risk of hot cracking. For surfacing plan two layers if the surface has to work in corrosion. Alternating current or direct current with the electrode positive, short arc, narrow beads. Take the heat tint off with a stainless wire brush.
