Avesta 316L/SKR-4D is a rutile thin coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 12 3 L R / E316L-17 type. It was developed for welding thin walled pipes and sheets, mainly in the chemical process and papermaking industries, and it is recommended for root runs and multi-pass welds in general fabrication of 1.4404 and 1.4436 / 316L type stainless steels. It is highly suitable for restrained positions and difficult site conditions, where it offers considerably higher productivity than manual TIG welding.
The electrode suits grades 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and the cast steel 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The weld metal resists general, pitting and intercrystalline corrosion in chloride containing environments, for example in dilute hot acids. The scaling temperature is about 850 degrees C in air and the maximum service temperature 400 degrees C.

A thin coating gives less reinforcement and easier access in a tight spot, but also less current reserve, so hold a short arc and do not drag the bead. On pipe roots use a backing gas inside, otherwise the root face oxidises black. Run straight beads without weaving and let the pipe cool between layers. Pickle and passivate the joint after welding.
