What BÖHLER Q E 316L-17 stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER Q E 316L-17 is a rutile coated, core wire alloyed electrode for welding austenitic stainless steels such as 1.4404 and 1.4435 / 316L. The maximum service temperature of the joint is 400 degrees C.

The data sheet lists the grades 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The electrode welds easily on AC and on DC with the electrode positive, with minimum spatter, the slag releases by itself and the weld comes out smooth and clean. The approvals cover TÜV, ABS and DNV.

  • Classification EN ISO 3581-A: E 19 12 3 L R 3 2
  • AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E316L-17
  • Coating: rutile
  • Current: AC/DC+
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 300 and 350 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (10648), ABS, DNV, CE

This is the version with molybdenum, so take it to tanks and pipework that will work in chlorides or dilute acids, not to plain 1.4301 structural work. Keep the current low and the arc short, because overheating 316L costs you pitting resistance. Brush the discoloration off with a stainless steel brush afterwards and passivate the surface if the procedure calls for it.
