What BÖHLER FOX EAS 4 M-VD stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER FOX EAS 4 M-VD is a rutile-basic coated, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 12 3 L R / E316L-17 type for welding the austenitic stainless steels 1.4404 and 1.4436 / 316L. The manufacturer chose a fast freezing slag for vertical-down welding in sheet metal fabrication.

The sheet grades you weld with it are 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and the cast grade 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). At the same electrode diameter and wall thickness the welding time drops by up to half compared with the vertical-up position. The fast travel speed gives low heat input and less distortion, and welding downwards overheats the parent metal less often, so there is less risk of losing corrosion resistance. The maximum service temperature is 400 degrees C.

  • Classification EN ISO 3581-A: E 19 12 3 L R 1 5
  • AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E316L-17
  • Coating: rutile
  • Current: DC+
  • Diameters: 2.5 / 3.2 mm
  • Lengths: 300 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (06907), DNV, CWB, CE

The fast freezing slag is your working tool here: guide the electrode so that the slag follows the pool and never runs in front of it. Keep the electrode angle close to perpendicular to the sheet, use DC with the electrode positive and a higher current than for vertical-up. This electrode is not meant for heavy wall joints, take EAS 4 M or EAS 4 M-A for those.
