What Avesta 316L/SKR stick electrode is used for

Avesta 316L/SKR is a rutile coated, low carbon, core wire alloyed electrode of the E 19 12 3 L R / E316L-17 type for welding 1.4404 and 1.4436 / 316L type stainless steels in all positions. The maker gives a maximum service temperature of 400 degrees C.

The electrode covers grades 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and the cast steel 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The weld microstructure is austenite with 5 to 10 percent ferrite, and the deposit resists general, pitting and intercrystalline corrosion in chloride containing environments, including dilute hot acids. The electrode carries TÜV, DB and DNV approvals and comes in a wide choice of diameters and lengths, from 250 to 450 mm.

  • Classification EN ISO 3581-A: E 19 12 3 L R 3 2
  • AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E316L-17
  • Coating: rutile
  • Current: AC/DC+
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 / 5.0 mm
  • Lengths: 250, 300, 350 and 450 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (01073), DB (30.014.18), DNV, CE

This is the basic acid-resistant electrode in a workshop, so match the diameter to the thickness: 2.0 and 2.5 mm for sheet and root runs, 4.0 and 5.0 mm for filling heavier grooves in the flat position. Hold a short arc and a low current, an overheated 316L loses its pitting resistance. Store the electrodes in their original tin, and use a quiver when the shop is damp.
