Avesta 904L is a rutile coated, fully austenitic electrode of the E 20 25 5 Cu N L R / E385-17 type, designed for welding 1.4539 / 904L type steels. It can also be used on 1.4404 / 316L components where a ferrite free weld is required, for example in cryogenic or non-magnetic applications.
The base grades are 1.4505 (X4NiCrMoCuNb20-18-2), 1.4506 (X5NiCrMoCuTi20-18) and 1.4537 (X1CrNiMoCuN25-25-5). The weld metal has very good impact toughness at low temperatures, high resistance to general corrosion in non-oxidising environments such as sulphuric and phosphoric acid, and to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride containing solutions. It meets the requirements of ASTM G48 Methods A, B and E at 40 degrees C, and the scaling temperature is about 1000 degrees C in air.

The maker warns directly about hot cracking on fully austenitic steels, so keep the heat input and the interpass temperature low and the dilution from the parent metal as small as possible. Run narrow, straight beads and do not heat the joint with weaving. Fill the crater smoothly. After welding pickle and passivate any surface that works in acids.
