UTP 683 LC is a rutile coated stick electrode of the E 19 12 3 L R 73 / E316L-26 type with a thick coating and a metal recovery of 180 percent. The manufacturer directs it to joining and surfacing austenitic CrNiMo stainless steels and to joints between austenitic and ferritic steels.
The base materials are 1.4401, 1.4571, 1.4550 and 1.4580. In joints with austenitic CrNiMo steels the deposit stays resistant to intergranular corrosion. The weld surface is smooth and free of notches at the toes, and the slag comes away without residue, so little grinding is left between layers. The electrode runs on AC and on DC with the electrode positive.

A recovery of 180 percent means you lay down more weld metal at the same current, so expect more heat in the joint and take longer pauses for cooling. Guide the electrode without weaving, so that you do not widen the heat affected zone. When joining stainless to carbon steel, clean the groove down to bare metal and keep the tools separate: use a stainless steel brush on stainless only. Dry damp electrodes to the data sheet before you strike them.
