UTP 653 is a rutile coated stick electrode of the E309Mo-16 type for joining and surfacing steels of difficult weldability and for claddings on unalloyed and low alloy structural steels. The corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties of the deposit point it at maintenance work: gears, cams, shafts, hot trimming plates and dies.
The metal crosses the arc in fine droplets, the bead surface comes out finely rippled and the slag comes away without resistance. The deposit resists corrosion and cracking, and it work hardens: the manufacturer states about 220 HB as welded and about 350 HB after work hardening. The electrode runs on AC and on DC with the positive pole on the holder.

If you are surfacing parts that will later work under pressure, use the work hardening and peen the surface after welding. Keep the current in the lower half of the range for the diameter and avoid wide weaving, because austenite does not take large amounts of heat well. On carbon steel lay a transition layer first and the working layer on top of it. Keep the electrodes in a closed pack, a damp coating gives porosity and a restless arc.
