BÖHLER FOX ASN 5 is a basic coated, fully austenitic electrode of the E 18 16 5 N L B type for welding corrosion resistant CrNiMo steels such as 1.4439 / 317L. It is well suited to the difficult corrosion conditions met in the chemical industry, flue gas desulphurisation, seawater desalination and above all in the pulp and paper and textile industries.
The base materials are 1.4436 (X3CrNiMo17-13-3), 1.4439 (X2CrNiMoN17-13-5) and 1.4429 (X2CrNiMoN17-13-3). The deposit is over-alloyed in molybdenum, to 4.5 percent, to compensate segregation and keep the corrosion properties when you weld base metals with 3 to 4 percent Mo. The resistance to stress corrosion cracking and to pitting is excellent, and the service temperature runs from minus 269 to 300 degrees C. The slag comes off easily, the bead is smooth and clean, and the electrode welds well out of position.
- Classification EN ISO 3581-A: E 18 16 5 N L B 2 2
- AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E317L-15 (mod.)
- Coating: basic
- Current: DC+
- Diameters: 3.2 mm
- Lengths: 350 mm
- Approvals: TÜV (00016)
The electrode comes in the 3.2 mm diameter only, so fill heavier grooves with several beads rather than looking for a larger size. Dry the basic coating to the figures the maker gives. A fully austenitic structure with no ferrite calls for thermal discipline: narrow beads, a low interpass temperature and filled craters. Pickle and passivate the joint afterwards if the vessel goes into a corrosive medium.
