BÖHLER FOX BVD 85 is a basic coated electrode with a very low hydrogen content in class H5, meant for vertical-down welding of large diameter pipelines and for structural work. The manufacturer recommends it for filler and cover passes. The deposit combines high strength with toughness held down to -50 degrees C, and the material is qualified for sour gas service after the HIC test to NACE TM-02-84, with SSC test values available.
The base steels cover L290NB to L450NB, L290MB to L450MB, P235GH to P295GH as well as S235J2 and S355J2. The deposit is extremely crack resistant, which on heavier walls reduces the risk of cold cracking. The design of the coating makes striking easier and suppresses start porosity, so the electrode stands up to field conditions. With this technique you lay down 80 to 100 percent more weld metal in the same time than welding vertical-up.

Dry the electrodes to the data sheet before work and take out of the oven only what you will use on the shift, because class H5 applies to a dry coating. Guide the electrode fast, with a slight lead angle, and keep the arc short. In low ambient temperatures preheat the pipe to the WPS, so that the stresses in the root are reduced. For sour gas, choose the base material and the procedure according to the requirements of the plant owner.
