BÖHLER FOX BVD 90 is a basic coated electrode with a low hydrogen content, intended for vertical-down welding of large diameter pipelines and for structural work. The manufacturer directs it to filler and cover passes, on pipe made of L485MB and L555MB steel.
The deposit is tough, highly crack resistant and low in diffusible hydrogen, which on higher strength steels cuts the risk of cold cracking. The coating was chosen so that the electrode strikes reliably and leaves no porosity at the start of a bead, and that behaviour counts on the right of way, where there is no workshop comfort. The vertical-down technique gives a deposition rate 80 to 100 percent higher than vertical-up welding.

Take the electrodes out of the oven just before welding and keep them out of the rain, because moisture in a basic coating leads straight to porosity and hydrogen in the weld. Tilt the electrode in the direction of travel and move it steadily and fast, without weaving. Weld the pipeline root with a consumable meant for it and use this electrode to fill the groove and cap it. Chip the slag after every layer and look at the toes before you lay the next bead.
