BÖHLER FOX CN 13/4 is a basic coated, low hydrogen electrode of the E 13 4 B / E410NiMo-15 type for welding soft martensitic and martensitic ferritic rolled, forged and cast steels. It is used mainly in the construction of hydro turbines and compressors.
The base materials are 1.4313 (X3CrNiMo13-4), 1.4317 (GX4CrNi13-4) and 1.4407 (GX5CrNiMo13-4). The corrosion resistance matches 13Cr and 13CrNi steels of a similar composition, and the balanced alloy composition gives good ductility, toughness and crack resistance despite the high strength. The hydrogen content in the deposit stays below 5 ml per 100 g. The 2.5 and 3.2 mm diameters weld in all positions except vertical down. Against the Supra version the maker states a higher recovery rate and better re-striking.

Soft martensite calls for a thermal regime: preheat the part, hold the interpass temperature to the WPS, and temper after welding, because a fresh joint is hard and stressed. Dry basic electrodes to the maker data sheet and work from a quiver, a low hydrogen figure only means something with a dry coating. Weld on direct current with the electrode positive, a short arc and no weaving.
