BÖHLER FOX CN 24/13 is a basic coated electrode of the E 23 12 L B / E309L-15 type with controlled alloying elements, set to meet the metallurgical requirements of buffer layers. The final layers are normally made with another stainless electrode chosen for the properties needed, mostly for improved corrosion resistance.
The ferrite content measured with a FERITSCOPE FMP30 is 11 to 14 FN and the service temperature reaches 400 degrees C. Depending on the base material being clad, an additional post weld heat treatment may be required, which has to be settled in the procedure before the work starts.

A buffer layer has a metallurgical job, not a cosmetic one: lay it thin and even, without dropping the current to the point of lack of fusion, and make sure it covers the whole base before the working layer. Dry the basic electrode to the maker data sheet. Clean the slag off completely before the next layer, residues in the grooves between beads give inclusions.
