BÖHLER FOX EV 63 is a basic coated electrode of the E8018-G H4R type for unalloyed and low alloy steels of higher strength. The manufacturer allows a base material with a carbon content up to 0.6 percent, and the German railways DB have approved this electrode for railway applications.
The range of grades covers S460Q to S500Q, S460QL to S500QL, the pipe grades L415MB to L485MB and L415QB to L485QB, and S460N and S460M. The deposit is ductile and crack resistant, and the recovery is about 115 percent. Apart from vertical-down, all welding positions are available. The diffusible hydrogen level does not exceed 4 ml per 100 g and the coating is moisture resistant.

Carbon up to 0.6 percent in the base material means preheating and slow cooling are compulsory, otherwise the heat affected zone comes out hard and cracks. Set the preheat temperature according to the thickness and the composition of the steel, not from memory. Bake the electrodes and keep them in a portable quiver. When repairing track components, follow the instruction of the infrastructure manager, because the DB approval covers defined applications.
