BÖHLER FOX EV 73 is a basic coated electrode with a NiMo deposit, of the E10018M type. The manufacturer intended it for high strength fine grained steels, including work at low temperatures, for steel structures, tank building and naval shipbuilding. The deposit is not sensitive to cold cracking.
The base material is S550QL. Less than 5 ml of diffusible hydrogen per 100 g remains in the deposit. The approvals include WIWEB for HY80 steel to AWS A5.5, alongside TÜV, DB and DNV. The electrode runs on DC with the electrode positive.

HY80 and related steels demand strict control of the heat input and the interpass temperature, so prepare a measurement record before you start. Bake the electrodes and carry them in a quiver, because the whole resistance to cold cracking rests on low hydrogen. Strike inside the groove, never on the surface of the part. On rigid hull joints spread the welding over stages, so that the stresses do not build up in one place.
