BÖHLER FOX EV PIPE is a basic coated electrode of the E7016-1 type for positional welding. You lay the root with it on DC with the electrode negative, and the filler and cover passes on DC with the electrode positive, and for those layers the manufacturer also allows alternating current. The material is qualified for sour gas installations after the HIC test to NACE TM-02-84, and SSC test values are available too.
The base steels are S255N to S420N, S255NL1 to S420NL1, L290NB to L360NB, L290MB to L415MB, L450MB to L555MB and P235GH. The electrode bridges the gap well and the slag comes away without resistance, so little grinding is left between layers. The impact energy of the deposit holds down to -46 degrees C. Compared with electrodes of the E7018 type, the manufacturer states a noticeable saving of time on the root thanks to a higher travel speed, and on walls from 8 mm up the root can be welded with the 3.2 mm diameter.

For the root switch the polarity to negative, otherwise you lose the calm fusion you reached for this electrode to get. Thinner wall, thinner electrode: leave the 3.2 mm diameter for pipe of 8 mm and above. Guide it with a straight motion, with slight pressure into the gap, and make no long stops at the groove faces. At the end of the shift put the electrodes back in the quiver, because a basic coating draws moisture from the air quickly.
