What BÖHLER FOX SAS 4 stick electrode is used for

BÖHLER FOX SAS 4 is a basic coated, core wire alloyed and stabilized electrode of the E 19 12 3 Nb B / E318-15 type, intended mainly for welding the titanium and niobium stabilized austenitic stainless steels 1.4571 / 316Ti and 1.4580 / 316Cb. The manufacturer states reliable CVN impact values down to -90 degrees C and recommends it for site work and for heavy, rigid components.

The base materials include 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) and the cast grade 1.4409 (GX2CrNiMo19-11-2). The electrode bridges gaps, gives a sound root pass and excellent X-ray safety. It welds in all positions except vertical-down, the slag stays easy to control and lifts readily, and the bead surface comes out clean. The maximum service temperature is 400 degrees C.

  • AWS classification A5.4 / SFA-5.4: E318-15
  • Coating: basic
  • Current: DC+
  • Diameters: 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 300 and 350 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (00774), DB (30.014.05), ABS, DNV, CE

This is the version with molybdenum, so take it to 316Ti and not to 321, where SAS 2 is enough. Molybdenum only raises the pitting resistance if you do not overheat the joint, so keep an eye on the interpass temperature. Store the electrodes in a quiver and dry them as the data sheet requires. Weld the root more slowly and watch the keyhole.
