Thermanit 30/10 W is a rutile coated electrode of the E 29 9 R / E312-16 type. The manufacturer recommends it for joining and surfacing on materials of similar composition, for tough joints in unalloyed and low alloy structural steels of higher strength, in high manganese and CrNiMn steels, and for dissimilar joints, for example stainless or heat resistant steel to unalloyed or low alloy steel and cast steel.
The base materials are 1.3401 (X120Mn12), 1.4006 (X10Cr13) and 1.4339 (GX32CrNi28-10). The deposit has high resistance to hot cracking and good toughness at a high yield strength, and the maximum service temperature of the joint is 300 degrees C. The electrode can be run on AC and on DC.

The high ferrite content of an E312 deposit takes heavy dilution, which makes this a good electrode for repairing parts of unknown composition. On Hadfield steel 1.3401 work in short runs and let the part cool in between, so that it does not turn brittle. The deposit is hard and not very ductile, so grind the weld toes smooth and leave no notches in a structure under fluctuating load.
