What Thermanit 686 TIG rod is used for

Thermanit 686 is a nickel alloy TIG rod for highly corrosion resistant NiCrMo alloys of the 686 type. It works on boiler components, furnace parts, chemical installations and heat exchangers exposed to aggressive media.

The rod suits grades such as NiCr21Mo14W, NiCr23Mo16Al, NiCr21Mo16W, NiMo16Cr15W and UNS N06022. It also suits cladding runs on steel and covers chemical process equipment, high temperature installations and mixed joints with steels.

  • Classification EN ISO: 18274 S Ni 6686 (NiCr21Mo16W4)
  • AWS classification: A5.14 / SFA-5.14 ERNiCrMo-14
  • Diameters: 1.0 / 1.6 / 2.0 / 2.4 mm

Keep the interpass temperature low and limit weaving, nickel is prone to hot cracking. Keep the rod inside the gas shield even after you lift it from the pool, a cold oxidised end will contaminate the next drop. Set the gas post-flow long enough for the pool and the electrode to cool under the shield. Match the diameter to the material thickness and the welding position, thinner rods are easier to control out of position.
