What UTP 387 stick electrode is used for

UTP 387 is a copper nickel base stick electrode used for joining and surfacing alloys of a similar composition with up to 30 percent nickel, along with other non-ferrous alloys and steels of different nature. The seawater resistant weld metal takes this electrode into shipbuilding, oil refineries, the food industry and the construction of corrosion resistant vessels and equipment in general.

The classification is E Cu 7158 (CuNi30Mn2FeTi) to EN ISO 17777 and E CuNi to AWS A5.6. The electrode welds in all positions except vertical down, which helps on seawater cooling pipework and heat exchangers. The approvals include TÜV and DNV, so the electrode is covered by documentation at marine inspections.

  • Classification EN ISO 17777: E Cu 7158 (CuNi30Mn2FeTi)
  • AWS classification A5.6 / SFA-5.6: E CuNi
  • Coating: basic
  • Current: DC+
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 300 and 350 mm
  • Approvals: TÜV (No. 01626), DNV

Copper nickel needs cleanliness: remove grease and oxides, and open the groove wider than on steel, because the deposit does not flow easily. Weld on direct current with the electrode positive, a short arc, no weaving and as low a heat input as you can hold. Lay the beads quickly and do not overheat the joint, or you will open up porosity. Dry the electrodes as the maker specifies.
