What UTP 39 stick electrode is used for

UTP 39 is a pure copper stick electrode suitable for joining and surfacing all commercial, oxygen free copper grades to DIN 1976, among them Cu-OF (CW008A), Cu-HCP (CW021A), Cu-DLP (CW023A) and Cu-DHP (CR024A).

The classification is E Cu 1893 (CuMn2) to EN ISO 17777 and E Cu to AWS A5.6. The maker states that the weld metal is pore free, well deoxidised and crack proof, and that its corrosion resistance matches commercial copper grades. The electrode carries a DB approval, useful on railway work.

  • Classification EN ISO 17777: E Cu 1893 (CuMn2)
  • AWS classification A5.6 / SFA-5.6: E Cu (mod.)
  • Coating: basic
  • Current: DC+
  • Diameters: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4.0 mm
  • Lengths: 350 and 450 mm
  • Approvals: DB (No. 63.138.02)

Pure copper carries heat away faster than steel, so without preheating you will not get fusion, above all from a few millimetres of thickness. Heat the part evenly and hold the temperature while you weld, run direct current with the electrode positive and a short arc. Clean the edges down to bare metal, and close an opened pack of electrodes and dry them as the maker specifies.
